Marin FairFax 2

  • The Marin Fairfax 2 is a simple bike that handles well, has high-quality components, mounts for fenders and racks, and comes with a lifetime warranty on its hydro-formed aluminum frame.

Add one of our electric assists for an incredible value on a custom-built electric bike, and skip the labor & capacity charge! Check out the Fairfax 2 with

The Fairfax 1 was featured in NYT's Wire Cutter review site as the best hybrid bike; this is an upgraded version of the same bike. We feel that the extra $150 is well worth it.

    From the manufacturer:

The Fairfax and Terra Linda make up our Fitness line, built for the flat-bar fitness road rider with the accessory mounts and gear range for future upgrades.
Key upgrades over the Fairfax 1:
    • Series 2 Fitness frame w/ butted & formed tubing and internal cable routing
    • Lightweight aluminum fork
    • Shimano Acera 3x8 speed drivetrain
    • Tektro hydraulic disc brakes

NOTE: The price reflects a $99 labor & capacity charge. This charge has been added to the MSRP of the bike to reflect the high freight costs and low availability associated with bicycles in this time, and to also acknowledge the value of a fully built bicycle (vs a bicycle purchased online and sold in a box). As always, complete bikes purchased from us are sold fully assembled (typically a $105 service) and receive a free 90-day "Basic Tune Up" (a $75 value). You can avoid this charge, and all installation fees, by purchasing this bike with one of our electric assist systems pre-installed.

  • Simply choose the options you'd like and order! You can pick up at our Seattle flagship store, or have the bike shipped to you. Please allow up to 2 weeks for shipment if you've chosen to add the Swift electric assist (highly recommended!).

The hub motor works to assist your pedal power. The motor supplies power as soon as you start to pedal, and the amount of power it provides is based on the level that you select on the display. When you stop pedaling, the motor shuts off. You can also purchase a handlebar mounted throttle to engage the motor if you'd like to cruise around without pedaling.

The Swift system assists to 20mph, or can be unlimited to 24mph (class 3 e-bike). The Meridian system assists to 25mph, or can be unlocked to 30mph for off-road use.

The battery life varies based on numerous factors (the power level used, the rider’s weight, the amount of pedal assistance, cargo, terrain, wind, etc). Even a cargo-bike rider using full power can expect at least 15 miles to a charge, and you get over 60 miles on a standard bike using lower power settings and pedaling normally. Most folks report a battery range between 15 and 40 miles.

The Swift adds 11 lbs, and the Meridian adds 16 lbs.

We suggest having this system professionally installed. The cost for this is $99, and generally $99 at most local bike shops comfortable with electric assist installation. If you'd like to install it yourself, please contact us for instructions.

The entire system comes with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty. Essentially, that means that any damage not caused by an accident or misuse is covered. See the full warranty here.

It really comes down to how well you, the battery’s owner, care for it. With that said, you can expect a full 400 cycles with the standard charger before the battery life drops to 80% of its original capacity. But with the variable charger, you can extend that number to 1,000 cycles or more. Find out how here. We warranty the battery for 2 years with some stipulations (see warranty section for more information).

From completely flat, the standard battery takes 6 hours to charge, and the extended battery takes 8 hours to charge. Want faster charging speeds? Check out the variable charger!

Nope. But don’t leave it plugged in for too long (24 hours or more). It keeps the cells from dropping down to their resting voltage and prematurely ages the pack.

No! Actually, it's best to not completely discharge the battery. We suggest you simply recharge the battery overnight after riding, regardless of whether it's completely dead or not.
